Husch Blackwell attorneys are presenting at the Colorado Health Care Association and Center for Assisted Living Legal Symposium on elder abuse and financial exploitation on March 12 in Denver.

Healthcare providers are responsible for detecting, preventing and reporting elderly abuse, including financial exploitation. With the enactment of the Affordable Care Act, the reporting requirements of the Elder Justice Act are now in effect.

Colorado recently adopted a law mandating certain individuals, including most licensed or certified caregivers, report suspected abuse to authorities. Within the first six months of the reporting requirement being in effect, there were approximately 3,800 reports, according to the Denver Post.

As part of the symposium, Partners Fred Miles and Carol Manteuffel will join other experts in addressing the questions and processes related to detecting, investigating and reporting elder abuse and financial exploitation. Topics will include the misappropriation of property of patients and residents in post-acute care settings.

Sponsored by Husch Blackwell, the symposium is at the Marriott Denver South at Park Meadows from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. To register, email nybarra@cohca.org or call 303-861-8228.
